Increase Energy and improve Health through Wu Tao Dance

Article by Michelle Locke

Everyone is getting on the dance band wagon right now. Dance is becoming a world-wide phenomenon, as people all over the world find the joy of expressing themselves through dance. We just have to look at the growth of tv dance shows to see how popular dance is becoming. It is no wonder people everywhere are signing up for dance classes in all styles.

A relative newcomer, Wu Tao Dance is the latest dance style to hit the streets. Suitable for everyone, Wu Tao is fundamentally about healing and uses dance and music to increase energy in the body, improving physical health and fitness, while also allowing people space to express themselves.

Wu Tao (translation The Dancing Way) is a therapeutic dance workout that aims to restore balance. Based on the principles of Chinese Medicine, it works by harmonizing the flow of vital energy called Qi or Chi, throughout the body. Chi flows through specific channels called meridians and like Tai Chi and Qi Gong, Wu Tao helps energise and unblock the energy flow.

Wu Tao is a dance therapy that balances the flow of Chi. It is unique in its style, as well as being exquisite to do. The choreographed movements in Wu Tao are flowing and expressive, and they energise and tone the body while bringing the spirit back to a state of peace.

The philosophy of Taoism and the principles of Traditional Chinese Medicine are the foundation of Wu Tao. Tao means the way or path, and Taoism is about living life in balance with the natural elements of the universe. The Taoist sages looked at life in the world around them and realised that by attuning themselves to it, they could live in balance, health and longevity. Hence, being able to ‘flow like water’, be ‘flexible like a tree’, turn inwards and build energy in the season of winter, or harness the energy and move obstacles from the path in spring.

Many people are looking for ways to ease stress, and become more peaceful and joyful. It is clear that being in this zone is good for you! New scientific studies (see Molecules of Emotion by Candice Pert) show the benefits of thinking thoughts that increase positive feeling states. It has been proven that one of the biggest killers of human beings is stress and its related conditions. Therapeutic methods to relieve stress, such as yoga, tai chi, meditation and psychotherapy have become very important.

One of the unique benefits that Wu Tao has is that you are able to embody positive states of awareness, as opposed to just thinking about them. You literally dance them into being.

Envisage this. You have a problem with your boss. It makes you feel crazy. You have been thinking of how to resolve it for days, going over and over it in your head. You finally come up with some kind of solution after a couple of days, and by that time you feel stressed and weary.

Now imagine this: You have a concern with your boss. Its making you crazy. You have been thinking of how to resolve it for days, going over and over it in your head. You manage to get to your Wu Tao Dance class. You take the situation with you into the dance.

As you dance, you let go of all your thoughts, worries, concerns and expectations. There is no need to think.

By the time you leave class, you feel peaceful, balanced and energized. The issue with your boss is no longer felt as a problem and you are able to find a resolution that feels good quickly and without difficultly. There is no anxiety or stress in your body and you feel assured to move ahead knowing the issue has been resolved. The energy is always available to show the way.

The Wu Tao Dances help you to access and harness life force energy. As you dance you begin to know yourself as one with this energy. It becomes easier to listen and follow your inner direction. Ther is a tangible sense of flow and grace. Bliss arrives effortlessly as the mind stops its chatter and you become fully immersed in the dance.

The 5 core dances are done sequentially in a general class of Wu Tao. It starts with a warm up involving gentle stretches and exercises to stimulate the flow of Chi, followed by the dances and ending with a relaxing meditation. When you leave the class, prepared to rejoin the world, you are centred, peaceful and energized. The effects are lasting and many people sleep better after a class.

There are wu tao classes especially tailored for children, the elderly, couples and the corporate sector.

It is most helpful to join a beginner’s class or workshop first, but many people jump straight into a regular class and pick the dances up over a few weeks.

Also available are classes and couples retreats in Wu Tao for Two. Created by Michelle and her partner Steve Richter (the composer for all the Wu Tao music). The dances are fun, easy and beautiful to do with a partner. Couples experience greater harmony, energy flow and intimacy with each other through the dances.

Wu Tao classes are held in Australia, New Zealand, Germany and other countries. Those people enthusiastic about Wu Tao and wanting to share this healing modality with others are able to take it a step further by training as an instructor. The Instructor training program is intensive, transformational and practical and consistes of a home study component and a practical intensive.

For people who are looking for a different experience where healing and balance are important, Wu Tao could be just the thing. Differing from other healing forms such as yoga, tai chi or pilates with its use of music and dance, it offers the discerning participant a very delightful, powerful and energising experience for body, heart and soul.
